Double helical gears are a variation of helical gears in which two helical faces are placed next to each other with a gap separating them. Each face has identical but opposite helix angles. Employing a double-helical set of gears eliminates thrust loads and offers the possibility of even more significant tooth overlap and smoother operation. Double helical gears are commonly used in enclosed gear drives as helical gear.

These gears are made available in two possible arrangements for oppositely-oriented helical gears/gear faces to provide both possible rotational directions. One of these arrangements is stable, and the other unstable. Under stable orientation, the axial force is directed towards the center of the gear, whereas in varying directions, both the axial forces are directed away from the center of the gear. Under both arrangements, the total axial force available on each gear is zero when gears are correctly aligned. Further, if these gears become misaligned in the axial direction, an unstable arrangement presents help in generating net force that can lead to dis-assembly of the gear train, while at the same time, sound understanding helps in developing net corrective force.

If the direction of rotation is reversed, the order of axial thrust is also changed, making the stable configuration unstable and functioning vice versa. These steady double helical gears can also be directly interchanged with spur gears without any requirements for different bearings.
